Grey bits that appear after replacing the Hotpoint FML 942 door seal should not be dismissed as normal break-in or used to prove a bearing failure. First stop the washer, unplug it from a dry safe position, photograph and save a sample, and compare the bits with the new seal and any visible rub mark around the seal lip or drum opening.
