Refrigerator Smell and Hissing After Scraping Freezer Ice

A brief hiss can be a normal refrigeration sound on some refrigerators, but a new smell and hiss that began immediately after scraping freezer ice must be treated as possible damage until the scraped area is checked safely. Stop using the refrigerator, disconnect power only from a dry, safe location if there is no immediate electrical hazard, ventilate the room without creating a spark, and keep flames and other ignition sources away.
