A battery charger making noise may have a normal relay or fan sound, but rapid clicking, loud buzz, heat, smell or sparks is abnormal. Identify the sound, check the battery and leads with power off, keep the unit ventilated, and stop if the cause is uncertain.

A battery charger that does not start can be blocked by the wall outlet, a damaged lead, a poor battery connection, wrong polarity or charge mode, a battery below the charger’s detection threshold, or a battery fault. Identify the charger and battery type first, then inspect the outlet and leads while disconnected and reseat the specified connectors.

For a battery charger that is not turning on, record the charger and battery labels, stop for heat, swelling, smoke, odor or arcing, and use only the manufacturer-specified charger. CPSC identifies overheating, fire, shock and charger/battery incompatibility hazards; recurring faults require qualified service or replacement.

If a battery charger is not working, test the wall outlet, connect the charger directly without an extension, inspect the plug and cable, and confirm the battery connections and polarity. A charger with no indicators after those checks needs service or battery testing.

A battery charger that becomes unusually hot should be unplugged and allowed to cool on a nonflammable surface. Check the charger, cable, battery, ventilation, and model compatibility only from the outside and only as the manufacturer's manual permits. If there is swelling, smoke, odor, melting, arcing, repeated overheating, or an incompatible or recalled charger, stop using it and arrange qualified service or the manufacturer's replacement process.
