If you smell gas from a Maytag gas oven or range, do not light any appliance, touch electrical switches, use a phone inside, or continue an ignition test. Leave the building and contact the gas supplier from a neighbor's phone or another safe location; if the supplier cannot be reached, contact the fire department.

First identify what is leaking and where: clear liquid in the cavity or on the floor, steam or droplets on cool door glass, or a sulfur-like gas odor/hissing. Maytag explains that moisture on the door of a gas oven can be normal condensation from combustion steam, and that high-moisture food or a model-specific Steam Bake feature can add moisture.

If a Maytag gas oven is not heating, first separate a completely unpowered control from a powered oven that fails to ignite or stays cold. Confirm the model-specific control setting, door position, and safe external power and gas supply checks.

If a Maytag gas oven does not ignite, first stop if you smell raw gas, hear hissing, see smoke or an abnormal flame, hear a bang, or suspect carbon monoxide. Do not keep trying to light it, use a match, remove the burner, or open the control area.

Define what ‘not working’ means before testing: a dark display, controls that will not start, a door or lock issue, no ignition, a flame that goes out, or an oven that ignites but does not heat. Record the exact model and code, then check only the accessible grounded outlet, household breaker or fuse, control lock/delay/demo state, door closure, and main gas supply as the Maytag model instructions permit.
