Smeg Dishwasher Sparking

1. Check 1

   Stop the Smeg dishwasher immediately when you see a spark, arc, flash, or hear electrical crackling. Do not open the door to inspect the tub, touch dishes or standing water, or start another programme to see whether the event repeats.

   Expected result: The appliance is still sparking, smoking, hot, wet, or making an abnormal electrical sound, or the event has stopped and the dishwasher is quiet.

   Next step: Keep people and pets away. Continue only with the dry-position isolation decision; do not perform any live test or internal inspection.

   Why this matters

   Why: An active or recently active electrical symptom cannot be safely classified from the outside. A quiet appliance is not proof that the underlying fault has cleared.

2. Check 2

   If the area is dry and you can reach the normal user control, accessible plug, or circuit switch without touching the dishwasher, water, smoke, or damaged wiring, switch the appliance off and isolate its power. If reaching the isolation point is not clearly safe, leave the appliance untouched and move away.

   Expected result: Power is isolated without contact with the affected appliance, or the dishwasher cannot be isolated from a safe dry position.

   Next step: Do not restore power, reset a tripped breaker, or reconnect the appliance for another test. Contact Smeg service; use an electrician or emergency assistance if the electrical supply, smoke, heat, or exposed wiring remains unsafe.

   Why: Isolation removes the immediate operating path, but it does not identify whether the fault is in a cord, control, heater, pump, wiring, moisture path, or another component. Inability to isolate safely is itself a reason not to continue.

3. Check 3

   Look from a safe distance for water on the floor, a leaking hose connection, smoke, scorched plastic, or a persistent fault indication. If water is leaking and the water tap can be closed without approaching the affected appliance, close it; do not handle an Aquastop or inlet assembly after a spark.

   Expected result: There is a leak or water near the dishwasher, an affected safety system has stopped the water, or there is no visible leak and only the electrical event is known.

   Next step: Keep the area clear and leave the dishwasher isolated. If water is spreading or contacting electrical equipment, use local emergency or plumbing assistance rather than entering the area to inspect the machine.

   Why this matters

   Why: Water can create an additional electrical hazard, while the absence of visible water does not rule out moisture inside the machine. Smeg describes Total Aquastop as a leak-protection system on equipped models, not as a substitute for service after an electrical event.

4. Check 4

   Prepare a service report without re-energizing the dishwasher: note the exact Smeg model or product code, the time and location of the flash, the programme stage, any error display, smell, sound, water, smoke, or breaker operation, and whether the appliance had recently been moved or cleaned.

   Expected result: The event details and model code are available, or the model cannot be read safely while the appliance remains isolated.

   Next step: Send the record through Smeg's country-specific customer-service route and state that the appliance sparked. Do not request or install a board, heater, pump, cable, or other part before diagnosis.
