First classify the smell and protect yourself: a burning or electrical smell, smoke, hot water escaping, or a strong chemical or sewage odor is a stop condition.

Check the selected program and load first, then safely check the drain filter and hose; if an empty-drum spin still fails, water remains, the machine leaks, or it repeatedly shows a fault, stop using it and arrange authorised service.

Separate a blank, unresponsive machine from one that powers on but will not begin a programme. For a blank display, unplug the washer, test the socket with another appliance, and reconnect it after the reset interval in the AEG guidance.

First distinguish a completely dead machine from one that lights up but will not start. Check the wall socket and plug from a safe, dry position, then perform only the single restart described in the AEG guidance.
