First note exactly where the Hotpoint washing machine stops: filling, washing, rinsing, draining, or spinning. Record the model, display or flashing lights, whether water remains in the drum, whether the door or lid is locked, and whether the load is soaking wet.

Do not pull on a locked Hotpoint washing-machine door. First stop or cancel the programme using the normal control and wait for the drum to stop and the lock indicator to clear; a hot or water-filled drum may remain locked for safety.

Do not diagnose a Hotpoint washing-machine error from the code alone. Photograph the complete code or flashing-light sequence, record the exact model, programme stage, water level, and whether the door is locked, then use the manual for that model and region.

Stop the cycle, close the water supply taps, and disconnect power only if you can do so without standing in water. Note when the leak starts and where the first wet spot appears: at filling, during washing, while draining or spinning, or only after the machine stops.

A noisy Hotpoint washing machine is best diagnosed by noting when the sound occurs: filling, washing, draining, or spinning. A new machine that bangs or walks may still have transport brackets or bolts installed, while a sudden rattle can be a coin or other object in the drum or pump path.

Start by separating a dead display from a washer that has power but will not accept Start. If it is safe and dry, check the outlet, plug, fuse or breaker, and any extension lead, then make sure the door is fully closed and no clothing is caught in the seal or latch.

A Hotpoint washing machine may appear not to turn off while it is finishing a drain, waiting for a door-lock release, or retrying a fill or balance step. First look for water, a leak, smoke, burning smell, exposed wiring, or violent movement; stop and isolate the appliance if any danger is present.

If a Hotpoint washing machine will not turn on, first stop for water near electrical parts, smoke, a burning smell, a hot or damaged socket, or repeated breaker trips. If the area is dry and safe, check the external power supply, confirm the door is fully closed, and make sure Control Lock, delay, program, and Start settings are not blocking the cycle.

“Not working” is several different symptoms, so first note whether the display is blank, the panel is lit but Start is ignored, water is not entering or leaving, the drum will not turn, or the washer stops mid-cycle. If the floor and plug are dry, check the outlet, plug, breaker or fuse, and door seating; do not keep resetting a breaker.

If a Hotpoint washer is still filling, stop the cycle and close both water-supply valves from a dry, safe position. Do not step into water to reach a plug or breaker.

First separate normal heat in the selected wash water from abnormal heat at the cabinet, plug, cord, socket, or control area. Stop the washer, keep clear of steam and hot water, and isolate power only from a dry safe position if there is smoke, a burning or melting smell, a spark, a repeated trip, visible melting, or water near electrical equipment.

First check that the detergent is in the compartment your model uses: regular detergent normally goes in the compartment marked II or main wash, pre-wash detergent goes in I only when pre-wash is selected, and fabric softener belongs only in the flower or softener compartment. Follow the detergent label for the load and never exceed the drawer's maximum line.

Stop using the Hotpoint washer after a breaker or RCD trip until you know whether the fault is in the appliance or the electrical installation. Do not repeatedly reset the breaker, bypass the protection, use an extension lead, or run another cycle to test it.
